Fair Trade Chocolate
Sold by Third Grade Students

Cocoa beans for producing chocolate are grown in some of the poorest regions of the world, and although chocolate is a multibillion dollar industry, many cocoa growers remain impoverished.  In addition, much of the cocoa production comes at the expense of children who are exploited as workers on cocoa farms.

Casady’s third graders sell Fair Trade certified chocolate  to help improve the plight of cocoa farmers, laborers, and exploited children.  Fair Trade certification guarantees that farmers receive a fair price for their cocoa and ensures that no child or forced labor is used in production.  It also ensure environmentally sustainable farming practices.

This project relates to chocolate activities in language arts.

Profits are donated to charities chosen by the students.  The charities they choose from focus on different needs: education, medical care, disaster relief, hunger, and shelter.
