Degrees of Latitude Around the Earth

These students are learning about lines of latitude. They identified the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn on globes of the earth, and then they are added these lines to their pumpkin globes with green yarn. They learned that the area between these lines is called the Tropics and that this area has a hot climate all year.
When they finished with the Tropics, these students are identified the Arctic and Antarctic Circles on a globe of the earth, and then they added these lines to their pumpkin globes with yellow yarn.  They learned that the climate inside these circles is cold.
In the course of this lesson, the students learned how many degrees of latitude there are to the North and South Poles, and from the the North Pole to the South Pole (half a circle), and around the entire earth  (an entire circle).   They learned that 90 degrees north is the North Pole and 90 degrees south is the South Pole.

The boys in the video below initiated their own geography game at snack this week.  Click to view it.
