These students are learning about temperature and their sense of touch (hot and cold).  How they perceived lukewarm water was affected by first holding one hand in cold and the other in warm water.
The first students in each class that experienced this were blindfolded and did not know that both hands were in the same tank of lukewarm water (these students volunteered to do this, and they understood the circumstances--they would be blindfolded,  have their hands in warm and cold water, and that we were planning to trick them).
This activity is our introduction to measuring temperature just as optical illusions was an introduction to measuring length.
