These students are learning to use a
graduated cylinder. They've learned to look for the bottom of the meniscus
to measure accurately. And they are learning how metric units of
measurement are related.
They learned that one milliliter equals a cubic
centimeter. They also learned that 1000 milliliters equals a liter (just
like 1000 millimeters equal a meter).
During this lesson, they measured 20 milliliters of
water in the graduated cylinders, predicted the mass of the water, and then
checked their predictions with a balance.
After learning to use their graduated cylinders, they
were challenged to use them to determine the volume of an irregularly shaped
solid (a large metal screw). This can be done by displacing water,
but they needed to figure out that trick.
